Meet the Team: Tom B.

|Behind the Scenes

What led you to join the De Facto team?

I joined De Facto fresh out of university, looking for something suited to my skills and near enough where I lived. I’d always been keen on technology, and university furthered that interest.

Describe a project that you’re most proud of

I’ve been very satisfied with numerous projects I’ve worked on along with my colleagues and our clients whilst at De Facto, but as a developer I’m probably proudest of the work I did on MGOC, which was the first project I took the lead on at De Facto, and which required a great deal of complicated design and development work across the ERP system to create something really streamlined to handle the multi-company accounting and logistics required.

Do you have any hobbies/keen interests?

When I was younger, I was a keen gamer, a story familiar to many my age in the sector. These days I don’t really game all that much, but I enjoy home brewing, bread baking, and making food in general – last week I made a large batch of Kimchi and a rye sourdough loaf. I haven’t completely given up tech as a hobby; I run numerous services and automations at home via self-hosted servers, which are usually satisfying and only occasionally incredibly irritating to maintain. Outside of the house I’m an avid walker and hiker. I try to get out for some kind of walk every day, which admittedly isn’t all that pleasant on some days.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time - what’s the goal?

In five years’ time I’ll hopefully be settled for several years into my first (purchased) home. Beyond that I have no clear idea – I rarely find myself agreeing with my plans from five years ago.

If you could pass a message to your younger-self, what would you say?

If I could ask anything of my younger self, it’d probably be to give my old dog a really good rub on the belly and scratch behind the ears.
