Peakdale Molecular Ltd was founded by
Ray Fisher in 1992. From small beginnings, Peakdale has
become the fastest growing contract chemistry company in
the UK. In 2002 they moved into their new state-of-the-art
research facility in Chapel-en-le-Firth, UK, which is designed
to house 100 scientists.
Their business is dedicated to supporting the research
and development activities of pharmaceutical and biotechnology
companies worldwide. Peakdales mission is to improve the
efficiency and effectiveness of drug discovery and development
by providing a range of services that deliver cost-effective
results against demanding time scales.
Peakdales customers include global pharmaceutical majors
and an increasing number of biotechnology companies. Over
the last two years Peakdale has expanded its staff levels
5-fold, and now operates in three distinct markets providing
novel screening compounds, catalogue intermediates and
service chemistry.

“ Reaching the Peak
in Contract Chemistry! ”
By 2002 Peakdale realised the urgent need to replace their existing
Financials and Business management software systems. After several
years of very rapid growth, those systems were increasingly failing
to live up to Peakdales expectations. Running Sage Line 100,
they were have major batch
control problems. Peakdale's business largely centres around
producing batches of molecular chemicals, making accurate and
efficient batch control recording of utmost importance.
With accurate control of stock and
other issues increasing, the recognition of the limitations
of Sage 100 proved the trigger to invest in a new system.
That system would urgently need to address their existing
requirements, and be capable of keeping pace with the
dramatic developments in their business.

Without any capable industry-specific solutions on offer, they
investigated a number of systems, and were immediately impressed
with de Facto S5’s comprehensive integrated solution.
 Demanding
Time Scales and Effective Methodologies
Due to the urgency of the situation, De Facto were called upon
to carry out a very rapid and crucial implementation of
S5. The ability to deliver this was a key factor in Peakdale
committing to the de Facto solution. With our extensive experience
in implementation and deployment, we were able to lead Peakdale
through from initial training to live
running in only 3 weeks! Such was the adherence to efficient
and effective methodologies that the limited time span posed
no undue difficulties, and to the delight of Peakdales management,
the implementation went without a hitch.
Chemistry
Industry Requirements in a Standard Package
Such is the power and flexibility of de
Facto S5 that Peakdale were quickly convinced that the system
could handle the key requirements of their highly specialised
business. Peakdale design and produce novel compounds and intermediates
to order. As such, they produce large numbers of variants at
a time, each of which is in some way unique. Without any modifications,
S5 was able to give Peakdale the levels of stock
traceability and batch traceability that are core to their
business.
S5 was also
able to deliver the efficient handling of variable units
of measure, as the volumes of their compounds produced
are not known in advance. Indeed, Peakdale are able to
use S5 to manage all the unique aspects of producing
screening compounds and intermediates, without any programming
modifications to the standard software.

Developing
Screening Compounds which involves producing literally
thousands of discrete products requires very different IT processes
to delivering their Contract Research Service which involves
selling their scientists time. Their Intermediates Catalogue
is a rapidly expanding list of novel building blocks for drug
discovery programs.

Peakdale further offer Discovery Services of Custom Synthesis
and Contract Research, where projects are undertaken on either
fixed fee quotation basis, or time and materials approach. All
in all, it adds up to complex and varying demands being placed
upon their Financials and Logistics systems. Where previously
Peakdale had to supplement the limited functionality of Sage
with extra external activities in Word and Excel, de Facto
S5 has enabled them to replace their disparate information
systems with one integrated solution, with obvious business
benefits.
